TRUST

 Trust The Evidence
Equipment
Bibles , handout

Have a copy each of the handout.  [printed large at the bottom of the page] Look at the examples and pick out which person appears untrustworthy and why.

[Here are some clues – look at it AFTER you’ve done some thinking!]
  1. Jenkins' expenses seem much higher than everyone else's.
  2. Jones' answer is copied from a dictionary. The errors in the spelling and grammar of the other three suggest they are more original.
  3. Johnson's alibi cannot be checked with anyone else.
Make the point that there may be all sorts of reasons why the above three people are actually honest, but the evidence points to them not being so, by comparison with the other people.
Untrustworthiness is almost always comparative. Think of  examples of occasions when people have seemed untrustworthy but have actually been honest.
Read Luke 16:1-8 What do you make of it. How do you feel about what the guy did?
The man was commended for his shrewdness not for his dishonesty. If people who are not Christians act sharply to win the trust of friends, how much more will Christians have to, without the possibility of dishonesty.
Now read v9-10. Have you ever been trusted with a business responsibility? How did it feel?
Make the point, to finish, that a reputation for trustworthiness will stand you in good stead on those occasions when you are innocent but there is no evidence to support your behaviour.

Choosing Truth
You need some paper for each person. Hand it out and get everyone to fold it into four equal sections (fold it in half twice!!!). Put these headings into three of the sections:
1) HOME
2) MATES
3) SCHOOL (college or work?)
4) (leave this section blank)
Being a person who is trustworthy is a choice that we make. Sometimes telling the truth will cost us - we might get into trouble, upset people or find ourselves in complicated situations. But Jesus calls us to be people who are trustworthy.
Think about / discuss whether it is important to you to be a person who are considered ‘trustworthy'. Are you willing to ‘choose' to be a trustworthy person?
If yes, please write in each box how you each resolve to be more trustworthy in each situation. With their family, friends and school.
You might want to write a prayer or simple a statement e.g. “I choose to tell the truth”.
In the final 4th box write Matthew 5:37.
Pray - and ask God to help each of us to keep the decisions we've made.
I Don't Trust Nobody!
Equipment
Play the Taylor Swift track, "Look What You Made Me Do" [click on this link]
Now think through / discuss these questions :
  • What makes it hard for people to trust?
  • Why might the singer find it hard to trust people?
  • What's the problem with never being able to trust people?
  • What's the problem with people never being able to trust you?
  • Who do you put your trust in?
  • Is that hard or easy?
Read Proverbs 3:5 and Isaiah 26:4
  • Do you think you can/could put your trust in God?
  • What does it mean where it describes God as “The Rock Eternal”?
  • Why do you think Taylor Swift could do with hearing this?!
Use this activity to get the group seeing that God wants us to trust in Him.  He is truly reliable and will never let us down.  He wants us to be like Him.
